Blacksmithing Basics

Blacksmithing Basics is an introductory course for those who have interest in, but no experience with, blacksmithing.   The day will begin with an illustrated lecture on the fundamentals of ironwork, basic terminology, primary tools, forging dynamics, and safety.  Students will then receive four hours of “hands-on” forge time with close personal supervision -- one instructor for every three students.  Each student will forge their own functional drive hook, and may, if time and student progress allow, complete additional small decorative items.

For safety purposes, students must bring and wear safety glasses. Students must wear closed shoes (no sandals/flip-flops/etc.), avoid dangling jewelry, and wear only natural fiber clothing (cotton/wool/etc.). Students may wish to bring hearing protection and leather or cotton gloves. Other than the forge fire, there is no building heat so warm dress is recommended.

Students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch as there are no food services on the premises.  A sack lunch has the added advantage of allowing a social lunch hour with everyone gathered around the forge fire.

Join us November 11, 2017, and immerse yourself in the science and mystery of the ancient art of blacksmithing.  Conducted at the Bartholomew County Historical Society’s Henry Breeding Farm, the class will begin promptly at 11:00 am and finish at 4:00 pm.

Students will receive one hour of lecture/presentation followed by four hours of hands-on work at the forge.

If you have already taken Blacksmithing Basics, we can cater a project specifically to your needs.

Cost is $25 per person.
Reservations can be made by calling 812-372-3541 or visiting BCHS at 524 3rd Street in downtown Columbus during business hours.
