A Look at Holidays Past
Columbus, Indiana – Amid the hustle of the holidays, there is a moment when magic happens. It may be a carol that suddenly lifts the heart or the jingle of bells on the street. For many, it is the aromas of cookies and pies baking, soups simmering on the stove, or a succulent turkey roasting in the oven.
As area residents engage in traditional holiday activities, the Historical Society extends an invitation to add new family traditions. The Bartholomew County Historical Society will recreate the enchantment of this most anticipated Season as it presents the first annual Victorian Splendor: Holidays at the Henry Breeding Home. Scheduled for December 1-3, guests will experience carolers on the lawn, music in the house, horse-drawn carriage rides, toys and other items belonging to the family, a display of crèches from the private collection of Mrs. Xenia Miller, holiday crafts activities for children, storytelling, Father Christmas and a display of model trains in the barn. The home and barn will be dressed in customary holiday fineries.
Children ages 12 and under will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult on Friday, December 1 from 5:00-9:00 pm. This event will become a family tradition.
Proceeds from this event will benefit youth programs presented by the Bartholomew County Historical Society. The Historical Society serves approximately 1,200 children each year by working with girl scouts, boy scouts, homeschool groups, English as a second language groups, and special needs individuals to create classes and tours specific to each. Six standard classes are offered for school tours, but custom classes are frequently created.
Tickets are $10 for BCHS members, $12 for adults and $5 for children 3-12. Children under 3 will be admitted free. Advance tickets are available at the History Center or at the event. For more information, visit www.bartholomewhistory.org or call 812.372.3541.
